Claude review: the thinking person's AI assistant

Anthropic's Claude has quietly become the assistant we reach for when the writing has to be good and the reasoning has to hold up.

VERDICTGREAT
4.7

Claude is the assistant we trust for serious writing, long-document analysis, and code review. It pushes back when it disagrees, admits uncertainty, and produces prose that doesn't need rewriting. For 200K-token contexts and editorial work, nothing else comes close.

Pros & cons

PROS

  • Best-in-class long-form writing
  • 200K context handles entire codebases
  • Honest about uncertainty
  • Artifacts panel is great for iterating on code
  • Less sycophantic than ChatGPT

CONS

  • Lower message limits on Pro than ChatGPT
  • No native image generation
  • Voice mode still in beta
  • Slower than GPT-5.5 on simple tasks

What we tested

30 days on Claude Pro ($20/mo). Used heavily for blog editing, contract review, and a 40-file Next.js refactor.

Writing quality

Claude's prose has personality. It doesn't default to LinkedIn-speak. For anyone who actually reads what the AI writes, this matters more than benchmarks.

Long context

We pasted a 180-page technical spec and asked cross-section questions — Claude answered correctly 19/20 times. ChatGPT lost the thread by page 80.

Code

Claude 4.5 Sonnet is our daily driver inside Cursor. Better than GPT-5.5 at understanding intent, especially in TypeScript.

Pricing

  • Free: limited daily messages
  • Pro $20/mo: 5× more usage, Artifacts, Projects
  • Max $100-200/mo: heavy usage, priority

Verdict

If writing or long-document reasoning matter to your work, Claude is worth it — even alongside a ChatGPT subscription.
